Interim Federal Health Program
The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides limited, temporary coverage of health-care benefits to eligible refugees and refugee claimants.
Eligibility
IFHP coverage is available to:
Resettled refugees (Government-Assisted Refugees, Privately-Sponsored Refugees, Blended Visa Office-Referred Refugees)
Refugee claimants
Victims of human trafficking
Coverage Types
Basic Coverage
Similar to provincial health insurance, covers:
Hospital services
Services of physicians and registered nurses
Laboratory and diagnostic services
Supplemental Coverage
Additional benefits including:
Prescription medications
Dental care (emergency and essential)
Vision care
Medical supplies and equipment
Mental health services
Duration
Coverage duration varies by category:
Government-Assisted Refugees: Until eligible for provincial coverage (usually after 3 months)
Privately-Sponsored Refugees: Until eligible for provincial coverage
Refugee Claimants: Until claim is decided
