Interim Federal Health Program

The Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) provides limited, temporary coverage of health-care benefits to eligible refugees and refugee claimants.

Eligibility

IFHP coverage is available to:

  • Resettled refugees (Government-Assisted Refugees, Privately-Sponsored Refugees, Blended Visa Office-Referred Refugees)

  • Refugee claimants

  • Victims of human trafficking

Coverage Types

Basic Coverage

Similar to provincial health insurance, covers:

  • Hospital services

  • Services of physicians and registered nurses

  • Laboratory and diagnostic services

Supplemental Coverage

Additional benefits including:

  • Prescription medications

  • Dental care (emergency and essential)

  • Vision care

  • Medical supplies and equipment

  • Mental health services

Duration

Coverage duration varies by category:

  • Government-Assisted Refugees: Until eligible for provincial coverage (usually after 3 months)

  • Privately-Sponsored Refugees: Until eligible for provincial coverage

  • Refugee Claimants: Until claim is decided
