Dr. Gabriel Fabreau

Dr. Gabriel Fabreau

Co-Director, MD, MPH, FRCPC

Associate Professor and a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences and active member of the O'Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary. Co-founded and co-leads MH2C. Embedded Internal Medicine specialist at the Calgary Refugee Health Clinic since 2014 and inpatient physician at Peter Lougheed Centre. Completed an MPH at the Harvard School of Public Health and an academic fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Research focuses on health services, clinical and public health research with recently arrived refugees, socially vulnerable populations, and complex chronic disease.

Dr. Annalee Coakley

Dr. Annalee Coakley

Co-Director, MD, CCFP, DTM&H

Dr. Annalee Coakley is a family physician and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, where she also serves as Director of Community Engaged Learning. She is co-director of the Migration Humanitarian Health Collective (MH2C), and Director of Strategic Partnerships and Global Engagement for the Society of Refugee Healthcare Providers. As Medical Director of Calgary's Mosaic Refugee Health Clinic from 2012 to 2024, she transformed the clinic into one of Canada's most recognized refugee primary care programs. Together with her colleagues, she successfully advocated for changes to federal family reunification policies affecting Yazidi refugees, co-created two intersectoral organizations supporting the mental health and resettlement of Yazidi survivors of genocide, and helped lead Calgary's COVID-19 outbreak response and vaccination clinics at meat-processing plants. She has chaired the North American Refugee Health Conference and currently co-chairs the International Refugee and Migration Health Conference. Her contributions have been recognized through numerous honours, including the College of Family Physicians of Canada's Jean-Pierre Despins Award (2024) and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Nesma El-Shazly

Senior Program Manager, MA

Holds a Master of Arts in Conflict, Security and Development from King's College London. Previously a Project Officer at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, where she managed a project to prevent and combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling in the Middle East and North Africa.

Senior Research Associate, MSc

MH2C's Senior Research Associate. Focuses on data analysis, academic writing, and mentoring research associates, assistants, and students. Worked at the Calgary Refugee Health Clinic from 2011 to 2020. In 2016, became a founding member of MH2C (formerly Refugee Health YYC).

Full-Stack Software Engineer, BASc, Applied Mathematics

Leads MH2C's software development and AI work. Currently building Recens — an annotation platform that accelerates systematic reviews using LLMs — and designing and developing The Atlas.

Mohammed Yasir Essar

Mohammed Yasir Essar

Research Associate, DMD, MSc

Former refugee from Afghanistan. Holds an MSc in Global Health from McMaster University and a visiting academic position with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. Lived as a refugee in Tajikistan after fleeing Afghanistan. His scholarly work has been published in journals such as The Lancet.

Pere Kennedy

Research Associate, MSc

Her passion for improving health equity — particularly in maternal and child health for disadvantaged populations — was sparked while completing studies in biological anthropology. Completed graduate studies in September 2025 and is working toward publishing her first paper, exploring the intersections of climate change, migration, and child health.

Mujja Alloba

Mujja Alloba

Research Assistant & Communications Lead

Pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with academic interests in health policy, migration governance, and systems reform. Prior to joining the team, Mujja pursued a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in Sudan and worked in frontline health education with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), before moving into community-based advocacy and refugee support initiatives across the SWANA region, with a particular focus on trans and gender-diverse displaced populations. She is also the Founder of Almees Trans Health Access Association, a federally registered nonprofit providing healthcare navigation and gender-affirming care access for trans newcomers in Canada.

Community Scholar, BCS, Medical Office Assistant Diploma

Medical Office Assistant at the Calgary Refugee Health Clinic. Brings extensive experience from Afghanistan as a program officer advocating for girls' and women's rights, now focused on refugee health. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for leading initiatives supporting Afghan refugees in the United States.

International Medical Graduate from Poltava State Medical University in Ukraine. Held a leadership position as a Local Public Health Officer with UMSA-Poltava (IFMSA). Since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, Olha has been actively involved supporting the Ukrainian community in Calgary.

Renzo Masiclat

Renzo Masiclat

Summer Student

An undergraduate student at the University of Calgary pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in Health & Society. As a first-generation immigrant, Renzo recognizes the profound impact that migration experiences, social determinants of health, and structural inequities have on the wellbeing of newcomer communities. His research interests center on immigrant and refugee health, community-based participatory research, health equity, and the intersection of migration and public policy. Through collaborative partnerships with community organizations, he hopes to contribute to research that amplifies lived experiences and informs more equitable health systems.
