Our Screening Recommendations

As for any other Canadian patient, refugee patients should also be offered age-appropriate screening (cancer, dyslipidemia, etc.).

Here are our recommended refugee-specific initial screening tests for both adults and children:

All Patients

  • CBC and hemoglobinopathy screen
  • G6PD levels
  • Schistosoma serology
  • Latent TB screening (tuberculin skin test or interferon-gamma release assay)

Adults Only

  • Hemoglobin A1c
  • Urine chlamydia/gonorrhea NAAT
  • HIV serology
  • Hepatitis B serology (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc)
  • Hepatitis C serology
  • Syphilis serology

Tests We Do Not Routinely Recommend

The following tests are not routinely recommended in asymptomatic patients. They should however be considered if the clinical picture warrants it or if additional risk factors are present:

  • Chest X-ray
  • Lead levels
  • Malaria screening
  • Pregnancy test
  • TSH
  • Vitamin B12 levels
  • Vitamin D levels

Special Populations

Infants

  • HIV testing should not be performed in infants <1 year old (maternal antibodies)
  • Schistosoma serology should not be performed in infants <6 months old
  • Latent TB screening is not recommended for children <2 years old

Pregnant Patients

  • Screen for vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Screen for subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnant patients from countries known for iodine deficiency
  • Consider Zika Virus testing based on travel history
  • Malaria in Pregnancy should be considered for any symptom
