Overview

HIV testing is recommended for all adult refugees as part of initial screening. Results should be interpreted in the context of the testing window period.

Positive HIV Serology

If HIV serology is positive:

  1. Confirm diagnosis with Western blot or HIV RNA
  2. Report to Public Health
  3. Provide counselling on transmission prevention
  4. Screen contacts
  5. Refer to HIV specialist for initiation of antiretroviral therapy

Special Considerations

Infants

HIV testing should not be performed in infants <1 year old due to presence of maternal antibodies. HIV DNA PCR should be used instead for infants born to HIV-positive mothers.

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

Consider discussing PrEP for high-risk individuals.
